Beginning Knitting

Block-a-Month Afghan-Beginner

Great North American AfghanLearn a wide variety of skills as you work toward completing an afghan. You will learn how to read knitting patterns and charts. This will help you gain confidence in all your knitting projects. Jan. - Monkey Wrench. This block will teach us how to pick up stitches, and use contrasting yarn to create a knitted version of a traditional quilting pattern called the Monkey Wrench. Feb. - Hearts & Cables; Our local designer, Susan Levin, created this square which teaches us short rows, and how to use slipped stitches to create a wonderful motif. March/April - The Thorn Flowers, by Gloria Tracy, is a dramatic square that uses only a four-row repeat pattern. We will also use a three-needle bind-off on the right side to add to the drama. May - Garter Coils, a garter st. square is anything but square. We will learn to swirl our knitting with well-placed decreases, and triangles. We will also explore garter st. grafting.

NEW-Great American Aran Afghan Aran knitting is an amazing way to make pictures with your knitting. With just knits and purls and some re-arranging of stitches, the possibilties are endless. Each month we will learn a different cable application starting in Feb. - Celtic Berries. The berry stitch is a fun, textured stitch to learn. If you've never learned to read a chart, then this class is for you. March - Holy DNA! The scientist in me loves this knitted version of a DNA strand, and more berries! April - Bobbles & Twist. This month we will juggle two charts with ease, and learn a bobble st. May - Hearts Abound! Our own Barbara Selesnick designed this square with wonderful twisty hearts.

Beaded Knitting-Fauxbius Wrap

Everyone asks - What is Entrelac? It comes from the French, meaning interwoven. It is a surprisingly simple technique once you grasp its principle, and it is an enjoyable way to knit with self striping yarns, as they make their own blocks of color. The easiest bag recipe you will ever meet, this project features no sewing assembly, play with color, and an exploration of the very fun world of knitted felting. You have the option to customize the size, handle options, and bag bottom. We will be knitting in the round and utilizing a 3 needle bind off; so, if those are new concepts, this is a safe place to play with them. You can also knit this as a blank canvas for "painting with fiber" by means of needle felting later.

Garter Stitch Top Down Shawl

This shawl is the best of many worlds. For the multicolor version, an elaborate effect is created by simple striping and clever yarn choices; the shaping is simple created by yarn overs; and the sizing is easily controlled by learning how to start from the top edge. Expand the range of your creative knitting projects by adding in felted wool shapes. Learn a simple way to felt wool roving into sheets that you can cut up to spice up your next one of a kind creation. After felting the wool, we will embroider the edges in order to pick up stitches and knit them right in. The wool shapes can be stitched, beaded and embellished to add spark and fun. Take your felt home to incorporate into a scarf, a hat or bag- whatever you can imagine.

Buttons are the icing on the sweater and it is a great joy to pair the right button with the right finished object. Learn some exciting ways to make customized buttons for your knitted project. This can add a higher level of tailoring and sense of careful unity to your already beautiful work, as well as open your mind to a new layer of creativity to explore with texture and color.
Top Down Bohus Tam
Two Sessions-Saturdays, March 6 and 20, 10 am to noon; $40, supplies not included. Skill Level: Intermediate. Instructor: Karin Wilmoth
The tradition of Bohus-style of knitting uses angora fiber and is similar to Fair-Isle, but differs in that it uses purls to provide texture and design to any knitted item. While we won't use angora, we will explore this way of knitting in the round by following a colored chart to create a lovely, floral tam from the top downward.
Knit Fixes II

This class takes off where Knit Fix I left off. Included will be how to correct a cable gone astray, and other co-mingled stitch patterns that have misbehaved. Unknitting lace patterns will also be discussed and more.
Mystery of Gauge

Unlock the mystery of knitting the item that you’ve envisioned by learning the facts about gauge. In this class we cover what a gauge is and why it is extremely important to knitting, along with essential information that a swatch can tell you about your finished item. You will learn how to read ball-band information, learn about the properties of different yarn weights, along with washing symbol information. Finally, learn how to use your gauge to create patterns in Sweater Wizard, the easiest computer knitting program on the market.
Blocking Your Way to Success

Buttonholes are easy and an exciting part of the finishing process. They are also a way to add your own touch to a garment's design. This class will teach you at least 6 choices for buttonholes, including chain loops without ends to weave in and a one row buttonhole.

You’ve had the pleasure of knitting the sweater. You’ve got all your pieces (back, front, and sleeves) all done. Now it’s time to put it together and you’re scared!! It’s not knitting anymore and you it’s not as enjoyable. This is the part that can make or break the garment. Let’s learn how to do it right. We will learn how to sew the seams together using mattress stitch and three-needle bind off. Also, learn how to pick up stitches for the neckline edging and button band.

Want to knit everything in the round!?! Steeking, or cutting your knitting, is the key to working most sweater patterns in the round, ensuring that patterns for fronts and backs always match and adding speed to your knitting process. We will work on machine sewn steeks, crocheted steeks, and hand stitched steeks. We will also discuss how steeking can be used to adapt patterns to the round.
Toe Up-2 Socks on 2 Circulars

In this class we will learn how to make two socks at the same time, while using the same two circular needles, based on your gauge. We will learn how and where to measure your foot, and how to work a short row heel.

Log Cabin Knitting is a technique adapted from quilting. It is an innovative way to play with self striping yarns, color combinations, and scrap yarn.
